Sympathomimetic Amines on Intestinal Muscle of Newborn Rabbits

Abstract
1. On the isolated intestinal strips obtained from newborn rabbits (1 to 15 days old) effects of sympathomimetic amines(norepinephrine, epinephrine, phenylephrine and isoproterenol) were investigated.
2. The intestinal ¢¥strips obtained from rabbits within 10 days after birth reacted with Contraction-or-inhibition to doses from 10-10 to 10-8/ml of norepinephrine and epinephrine, and reacted with inhibition to doses above 1O-7g/ml.
3. Isoproterenol produced chiefly inhibition irrespective of the day after birth.
4. The motor response to norepinephrine and epinephrin was abolished or reversed to inhibition by pretreatment of the preparations with Hydergine.
5. The inhibitiory response to norepinephrine and epinephrine (10-10-10-8g/ml), which was observed in strips from rabbits within 10 days after birth, was abolished or reversed to contraction by pretreatment of the preparations with pronethalol.
6. The above data indicate that the intestinal smooth , muscle of the newborn rabbits has two types of adrenergic receptors, alpha and beta. The former seems to mediate contraction and the latter inhibition by sympathomimetic amines.
